Hypermoi: Who Speaks After Me?

From my 2006 Hypermoi project to a possible LLM of oneself, I explore the digital double that survives us: what it remembers, what others know about us, and the right to stop answering.

In 2006, Email 2067 let a person send words toward a future in which their author might no longer be alive. I called Hypermoi that part of ourselves deposited on the internet, able to keep circulating after we disappear. A Libération clipping and a Poptronics article document the original intuition.

Artists have since made the recording of the self into a physical experiment: On Kawara’s daily postcards, Tehching Hsieh’s time clock, Timothée Rolin’s photographs in ADaM-Project and Wafaa Bilal’s wearable camera. With Mnaomaï, I attached memories to places and dates. These archives are never neutral; someone observes, selects and classifies.

AI changes the nature of a trace. A letter records what I said; a language model generates what I might have said. An “LLM of oneself” could learn from a voluntary corpus and reply in a familiar style. It would be neither my consciousness nor my body. The closer the resemblance, the more visible the difference must remain.

Meta is already preparing another answer with Muse, its personal agent planned for AI glasses. Conversations, chosen captures, social apps and purchases could become parts of one service. Meta describes protections for data processed in its cloud, but the memory and the agent remain within its commercial infrastructure. The alternative I seek must let a person keep, move or destroy an archive without depending on a single company.

I now imagine Hypermoi as something worn, with a camera and microphone that can truly be switched off. It would connect selected images, voices and places. People close to me could add their memories or dispute mine without their words silently becoming mine. Every reply would distinguish quotation, synthesis, hypothesis and silence. The double might even be deleted on a date chosen in advance.

The question is not how to defeat death through simulation. It is who may tell a life when its author can no longer reply, while preserving the disagreements that make us more than a coherent profile.
